Encino is over the hill from Pasadena in the San Fernando Valley, and the crew runs the truck there. The city will come to the home for large items that do not fit the bins, and asks you to think about donating first. Text a photo to (626) 590-3118.
The carry from inside the house is usually further than it looks, and that is what the team works out off the photo rather than guessing on the day.
Some of it has rules attached. If a refrigerator or freezer is going, the city asks for the doors to come off before it goes to the curb, so a child cannot climb inside, and the city transfer station will not take hazardous materials, liquids or construction debris. Refrigerator and freezer removal covers the big ones, and a remodel pile goes under construction debris removal. The city also runs five drop off locations for anyone who would rather not wait for a pickup day, and large metal items and appliances go out on the normal collection day, though they often need a different truck. That is a drive across town for some of it and a wait for the collection day for the rest. A single photo covers all of it in one visit.
How Bulky Item Pickup works
- Bulky items are picked up on your regular trash day.
- You have to let the city know at least one business day before your normal collection, so the right truck is ready.
- A bulky item means anything non hazardous and non electronic that is too large to fit in your black trash bin.
- Have an itemized list ready when you schedule, a quick list of what you are putting out, so the right sized truck gets sent.
- Roll carpet up and tie it before it goes out.
- Furniture such as couches, tables and chairs is taken, and so are mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, and large wood pieces or doors.
- Construction materials such as concrete, bricks and dirt cannot be picked up at the curb.
- Paints, solvents and chemicals cannot be picked up at the curb.
- Cardboard is not taken unless you have a scheduled Move In or Move Out service.
